Many companies pay fortunes for software licenses when they could get the same if not better functionality and support from open systems for a fraction of the cost.
Avoid "fatware" that is expensive to maintain and to use. Many large firms take on huge enterprise systems that not only cost a fortune to buy, configure and support, but actually add little value to the working practices of the firm.
Most .well-known software packages have an open-source equivalent; desktop office packages, large databases, web and application servers, operating systems, CRM, accounting and specialist applications.
